Cases of kids swallowing foreign objects have always been present since time immemorial. You’d be surprised to know that kids as old as the age of fourteen tend to consume objects that may cause harm to them. However, with experts like Dr. Saad Saad in play, you can rest assured that your child’s case will be handled with the utmost urgency it deserves.
Dr. Saad Saad, a pediatric surgeon and with a career that spans for over four decades, has been at the center of more than 1000 foreign object removal procedures performed on kids ranging from the age of six to fourteen years. In a recent interview with the Medical daily times, the renowned pediatric physician took the world through his journey in medicine and how he got to where he is today.
According to Dr. Saad Saad, one of the main reasons why most kids, especially at the age of two, swallow objects is curiosity, a factor that always leads to them being in trouble. He further adds, that if they are lucky, the objects will easily pass to their stomachs without causing any complications but if not, they end up being stuck in the food pipe or windpipe resulting to severe complications. Some of the most common objects swallowed by kids include coins, peanuts, hot dogs and even at times, batteries. Some of the most common signs that a child has taken such include troubled breathing, swallowing and wheezing.
In case of such instance, Dr. Saad advices parents or grownups not to try and scoop the objects with fingers as this might lead to further blockage. Instead, he advises them to offer first aid by holding them upside down and tap their backs or use the Heimlich maneuver to remove the stuck object. If these two methods fail, he advises that the child should be taken to the ER immediately where an esophagoscopy or bronchoscopy will be performed to remove it and eliminate the dangers.
Apart from just talking about these foreign objects, Dr. Saad Saad also went ahead to showcase some of the objects he has removed in his career to show the seriousness of these situations. For instance, he once dislodged an entire toothbrush from the windpipe of a fourteen-year-old child. Other objects include a locket, coins and even at one time; he helped remove a tooth which a six-year-old girl had swallowed while coughing creating a happy ending for the girl who believed in tooth fairies.
Nevertheless, it has not been all sunshine and rainbow. According to Dr. Saad carrying out such procedures calls for utmost preciseness which was a hard thing to achieve in the past thanks to the lack of the right equipment. In respect to this, Dr. Saad’s innovative mind came up with an anti-fog endoscope which has helped revolutionize such procedures, as doctors and physicians no longer have to remove the endoscope out of the patient’s body to suck the fog away as his invention does that while performing the procedure at the same time.
