Santos was born in Azerbaijan to José Eduardo dos Santos and Tatiana Kukanova. Her family was known for being one of the more affluent names in the business, and her father was later the one who took on the position of President of Angola. After receiving a brilliant schooling education, Santos decided to study electrical engineering in London. While studying here, she met her husband, Sindika Dokolo (Interview).

Even though Santos came from an affluent family, she is known for making a name for herself on her own terms. During the last twenty years, she has played an important role in the growth and development of several companies and businesses and has enabled the development of the real estate sector within the country. During the early years of her career, she worked with a number of companies within Europe before she decided to move back to Angola and work with businesses leaders from within her own country. One of the first companies that she worked with in Angola was in the field of engineering, something that Santos was fairly familiar with.

A few years later, she decided that it was time for her to start her own business and lead her own company. She first decided to start up an establishment known as Miami Beach Club, which stood as one of the first nightclubs on the island of Luanda. Soon after, Isabel dos Santos started to expand into other related business ventures and soon saw herself expanding outside the hospitality industry. This ultimately led her towards the field of real estate, which is where she stayed, and expanded her business even further.
